Sage Safaris brings you distinctive hunting experiences in the sagebrush plains of northern Montana. Uniquely, we never host more than 1 group at a time. This means that our vast stretches of private land and luxury campsite will be for your party's sole use during the entire length of your stay.

We specialize in wild upland game hunting, but also cater for a small number of big game hunts each year. Our habitat is a mixture of native plants and cropland and is traversed by meandering waterways with patches of dense brush and willows. The land serves as a sanctuary for local wildlife. Our hunts offer real challenge and an unforgettable experience of the Great Plains.

Inspired by luxury African safari camps, our on-site accommodation is unique among hunting destinations. Each canvas wall tent sleeps 2 and is finished with wooden floors, real beds, a wood stove and  safari furniture. There is a separate lodge at the camp which houses a fully equipped kitchen and dining area. Each tent has its own private wet room with permanent heating and a walk-in shower.

Owners Jacob and Sarah Dusek look forward to welcoming you and making your stay at Sage Safaris one that refreshes, enriches and exhilarates. This truly is a unique outdoor destination that you will want to return to year after year.

Upland Game Hunting

Currently offering up to $500 in credit toward travel costs, see Specials page for more details
Our upland hunts never host more than 1 group at a time. All our clients will enjoy exclusive use of vast stretches of private land and our luxury campsite for the entire length of your stay.

Sage Safaris is home to a variety of wild birds such as Sharp Tailed Grouse, Hungarian Partridge, and Pheasants. You will likely encounter all of these species during the course of your stay. Our habitat is a mixture of cropland and native plants, traversed by meandering waterways, making it ideal for upland game.

A typical day starts with a beautifully prepared breakfast in the lodge, at the time of our guest’s choice. After breakfast your guide will lead you on the morning hunt, where you will have opportunity to hunt a variety of wild birds. After several hours of walking our grounds you will return to the lodge for a 2 course leisurely lunch. After lunch your guide will lead you back into the field to hunt a different area than you already covered that morning. Guests will have the opportunity of either enjoying a full English afternoon tea in the
field, "A Colonial Safaris Tradition" or sundowners a little later in the evening. Drinks and hors d'oeuvres will be served whilst you enjoy the stunning views of the Great Plains and the seemingly unending expanse of Big Sky. After drinks it's time to head back to camp and prepare for a gourmet dinner served at the lodge. After dinner guests can sit around our fire pit and recall the highlights of the day. Every day at Sage Safaris is a magical experience!

All birds live wild on our land making our hunting challenging and unpredictable. Due to the nature of wild bird hunting, we encourage our guests to book for a minimum of three days to ensure a successful hunting experience. Guests should be prepared for long periods of walking as all hunting is done on foot.  Guests are encouraged to bring their own dogs. However, we will have our own dogs at your disposal for the length of your stay. Guiding is included with all our upland packages but we also encourage our guests to be as independent as possible.

There is no limit to the number of Pheasant, Sharp Tailed Grouse and Hungarian Partridge limits are subject to state hunting regulations (4 and 8 birds per hunter per day respectively in 2009).

For the 2010 season, there is a minimum of 2 guests per booking and we are currently able to host parties of up to 4. Our capacity will be expanded in 2011  and we will be able to host a maximum of 8 guests.

The upland hunting season at Sage Safaris runs from the beginning of September to early December each year.

Luxury Camp & Facilities

Our on-site accommodation is inspired by the luxury tented camps often found on African safaris. Unique among hunting destinations, each of our large canvas wall tents sleeps 2 and comes complete with real beds, a wood stove and furnishings.

There is a separate lodge at the camp which runs on solar power and is constantly heated during the season. The lodge houses a fully equipped kitchen and comfortable dining area. Each tent has its own elegant wet room with permanent heating and its own walk-in shower.

Gourmet dining is part of the experience at Sage Safaris. Drawing from the agricultural wealth of Montana and the West, and our love of international cuisine the Chef at Sage Safaris creates exquisite meals that use the freshest meats, produce and ingredients available. We have our own kitchen garden and we pride ourselves on using local, seasonal ingredients whenever possible.

Huckleberries might compliment a breakfast of French toast and hand-made sausage. Fresh upland game prepared with herbs and fresh vegetables may be paired with a glass of our house wine. The dessert menu boasts pies filled with Montana berries, fresh fruit pavalova and creme brulee.

Note: Sage Safaris will accommodate any special dietary requests you may have. Please let us know in advance.

Game cleaning, preparing and freezing is provided.

Clay shooting grounds are also located a short walk from the camp and are available for your exclusive use.

COMING SOON!
A trout pond is currently being prepared which will be available for the use of our guests after the 2010 season.

Big Game Hunting

Sage Safaris offers a very limited number of world class big game hunting opportunities for White-tail Deer, Mule Deer, and Pronghorn Antelope.

The current Whitetail state record 252 1/8 was taken less than 5 miles from our camp.

We offer hunting on large blocks of private land surrounding our base camp. We manage our hunts to control the number of animals taken each year ensuring that we sustainably manage wildlife numbers. For this reason we only allow a very limited number of hunts each year; therefore please book early to avoid disappointment.

All of our hunts are available as either archery or rifle hunts.

Guests should be prepared for long periods of walking as all hunting is done on foot.

The landscape lends itself to a spot and stalk technique which is one of the most exciting ways to hunt big game. This usually involves long periods of glassing followed by strategically planning and executing a stalk.

For the 2010 and 2011 seasons, we only open to big game hunting for a single week during the peak of the rut. We are able to host 2 hunters during this week and both positions are still open.
